How Many Calories to Lose Weight - Tips on Really Effective Weight Loss

By Dina Mills

Many people who have problems losing weight consider the question, "How many calories to lose weight?". It comes as no surprise as more and more people start to become more aware of their weight, and health. The answer is really very specific to each person, and there is an easy formula you can use to discover your own personal caloric needs.

There is no mysterious number of calories we should consume to lose a certain number of pounds. A surprising number of people will lose weight by eating approximately 1,500 calories, however if you lead a more sedimentary life, you may need to eat even less calories to start to lose weight. Another good idea is to start exercising to speed up your metabolism so that you can burn more calories.

You can begin to figure out how many calories you should eat in order to maintain your weight with a little simple math. Determine your basal metabolic rate or (BMR). BMR is the amount of energy that your body actually needs to function properly. An interesting fact is that we will use approximately 60% of the the calories that we take in order for our bodies to function. There are two different formulas for women and men (adults) which I have noted below:

Women:
65 + (4.3 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)

Men:
66 + (6.3 x weight in pounds) + (12.9 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)

The next step involves factoring in your level of daily activity, or current lifestyle.

* If you don't get much exercise at all: BMR x 20%
* If you get in a little bit of exercise: BMR x 30%
* If you are very active and exercise a lot every day for 45 minutes or more: BMR x 40%
* If you are extremely active and constantly in motion: BMR x 60%

Take the resulting number from above, and add this number to your BMR. This will give you the number of calories that you need to take in each day to maintain your current weight. So ask yourself the question, "how many calories to lose weight?"

It's simple...To begin losing weight, simply decrease this number of calories, exercise, and drink more water.
