Growing grapes successfully depends upon a number of things

By Jackson Taves

All grapes require full sunlight, reasonable water plus some timely care. However, you'll be in good shape with better results if you select and plant a variety that thrives with your climate.

You'll find three basic different kinds of grapes; wine (like Cabernet or Chardonnay), table (Thompson seedless or Red Flame) and slipskin (Concord). Here's why you should grow them:

* Organic Compost
* Pruning Shears

* trellis, arbor or grape stakes

Select the style of grape you want to plant (table, slipskin or wine), take a look for a variety that suits your local climate. Ask any local nursery professional which choice of grape does best in your area. Some varieties prefer more or less heat and obtaining a variety that does well in your location is the key to successful viticulture.

Plant grapes from nursery stock or cuttings within the site positioned in full sunshine which happens to be mandatory for great fruit production. The developing fruit necessitates ample heat. Vines planted in somewhat shade are inclined to fungus disease.

Amend the prevailing soil that it is loose, fast draining and loamy. Grapes are deep rooted, so the more deeply you amend the soil, the better. Organic compost put into a depth of 24-36 inches is ideal.

Give a trellis or any other type of support to the vines. Some varieties grow rampantly all of which will need ample support. Trellising also keeps the fruit across the top of the soil where it is subject to rot. Grapes might be educated to grow along a south-facing fence or as espalier across the side of a building. Arbors and traditional grape stakes work exceptionally well to maintain the fruit off the floor.

Prune grape vines when they are dormant. Fruit is generated in one years old wood, on stems which have formed the last season. One year wood has smooth bark, older wood incorporates a shaggy appearance. Retain a fundamental framework and remove long runners to prevent plants compact and under control. Remove long runners mid-season to maintain plants under control.
